Joker 2 Folie A Deux Review 2
I had the opportunity last night to watch Joker: Part Two. I should note that I had already seen some negative opinions about the film on social media, and I hadn’t watched the trailer or checked its rating on IMDb up to this point.
In my personal opinion, the second part is a masterpiece—even though I’m not a fan of musical films. However, I found that the songs used in the film weren’t inserted randomly or just because the production team wanted to make it a musical. The truth is, the songs served a clear purpose: to portray Joker’s imaginary world and his extreme hallucinations, which stem from psychological pressure, physical and emotional pain, and trauma he endured since childhood. These pressures are reflected in almost every scene, whether caused by his own behavior or by society and the people around him.
The use of songs and musical performances—though not overused—added another layer to the film and gave the director (who is also one of the screenwriters) the opportunity to incorporate a theatrical element into a film that is otherwise entirely cinematic in its presentation. This theatrical side gave the movie a unique emotional flavor, distinct from what we typically see in musical films. You even find elements of dark comedy in some of these moments.
The film is deep in every sense, and in my opinion, it is a true artistic masterpiece. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys drama and dark comedy films.
Joker 2 Folie A Deux trailer
There is great depth in the portrayal of the Joker’s character. There are magical touches from Joaquin Phoenix (the actor who plays the Joker), delivered in a way that truly deserves awards. Of course, we must not forget the role of the film’s director, Todd Phillips, who orchestrated the direction of this cinematic play with incredible precision. Anyone familiar with the Joker’s character from the first film will notice directorial touches in this sequel that can only be described as brilliant.
The performance of the Joker in this part is no less powerful or artistically refined than in the first film. In fact, I would even say I can’t imagine watching a Joker film with anyone other than Joaquin Phoenix in the role. In my opinion, he added so much to the character with his profound performance, and I truly believe he deserves the highest international awards for his impactful acting—blending moments of dark comedy with tragic depth.
I honestly hope to one day watch a documentary that explores how Joaquin Phoenix mastered this role: how he prepared for the film, how he researched and delved into the Joker’s character, and what sources he drew from to approach such a complex and multi-dimensional role.

There was also a clever directorial approach in how some of the Joker’s musical hallucinations were connected to the female lead of the film, portrayed by the global pop icon Lady Gaga, in her secondary role. For instance, in one of Joker’s imagined musical scenes, his lover shoots him in the stomach at the end of the sequence. That scene symbolically ties into her betrayal throughout the story—specifically in areas where he deeply admired her.
Later in the film, the Joker is actually stabbed in the stomach by a fellow inmate. In that very moment, he re-enters the same musical hallucination from earlier, with blood from the stab wound appearing in place of the imagined gunshot. He continues performing the musical number in that dreamlike state, expressing his sorrow over losing the woman he loved—who had left him just before that stabbing scene.
Lady Gaga’s character represents the early beginnings of Harley Quinn—showing how her personality developed and was influenced by the Joker. The Joker felt a strong connection to her, believing she was the only person who truly understood him. Yet, she leaves him toward the end of the film after falling in love with him—only to realize that he was denying the very identity of the Joker, trying to prove to the world that he was just one person, without a fractured personality.
Toward the end of the movie, the Joker is stabbed in the stomach again on his way to meet someone who had requested to see him in prison. As viewers, we are led to believe that this might be his final moment, as he collapses motionless on the ground. However, questions remain—who was the person that wanted to meet him? Could it be Harley Quinn? And most importantly—did the Joker really die in that final scene, or did he survive?
Personally, I feel there’s a strong chance that a third installment might be produced. Perhaps it was even originally planned before the film’s financial setbacks upon release. We can’t be certain what the future holds, but I do hope we get to see a continuation of this compelling story.
With love,
