A Story of Musical Survivors
It was achievement enough that the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra managed to survive the darkest days of war—when basic supplies were scarce, electricity was unreliable, and musicians practiced in secret, risking their safety under the threat of militants who deemed music un-Islamic.
They endured bombings, random attacks, and power outages during performances—putting into perspective any concerns we may have about the challenges faced by the arts elsewhere.
Established in the early 1940s, the Iraqi National Symphony Orchestra (INSO) is considered the oldest orchestra in the Arab world. Its journey has been far from ordinary. Through decades of political and social instability, the orchestra faced relentless challenges. But what kept it alive was the unwavering dedication of its members and their love for classical music.
Unlike many symphony orchestras around the world, the INSO didn’t grow under ideal conditions. It persevered through years of conflict, governmental neglect, and societal shifts that threatened its very existence. And yet, it remained a symbol of cultural resistance and resilience in Iraq.
To preserve and share this remarkable story, the original film has now been remastered in stunning 4K quality and transformed into a six-part documentary series, making it accessible to wider audiences. Each episode is presented below on this page, offering an immersive look into the orchestra’s history, struggles, and triumphs.
If you get the chance to watch these episodes, I strongly encourage you to experience the story on screen. It is more than just a film—it is a tribute to the human spirit expressed through music.
